The Music Revolution

Last week, I had lunch with the head of the new media department at one of the major music labels. She was recounting a recent marketing meeting for one of her label’s big Spring releases. She was asked by the President to present her department’s marketing plan which included among other things campaigns with major portals, download services, social networking sites and a wireless carrier. She said “It seemed as if our department was THE marketing for this album’s release.” She ended our lunch with another anecdote. When I get nervous about what our department is doing on a big artist release, my boss always calms me by saying “Don’t worry, you won the revolution. Now get back to work.”

I’m guessing the President still has his assistant opening and responding to his emails? These new media departments are going to be the proactive arm for all the labels…with all the other departments (should they still exist) operating in a reactive (or even protective) mode. Looking forward to seeing a new media head becoming President of a major label…it’s coming.
